what is an ipl photofacial?

Intense pulsed light (IPL), or photofacials, target specific damage that has occurred in the skin over periods of time, such as sun spots, pigmented acne scars, broken capillaries, and overall skin redness associated with rosacea. IPL effectively restores overall youthfulness by helping to even out natural skin tones. Offered at the Plano, TX office of facial surgeon, Dr. Vu Ho, IPL uses a range of wavelengths to penetrate the skin. The heat from the Elite MPX™ laser will cause damage to the skin to initiate the skin’s healing process. IPL can be safely performed on the face, neck, hands, and chest. We welcome you in for a complimentary consultation to learn about the procedure and to find out if you’re a candidate.

am i a candidate for an ipl photofacial?

During a consultation, a medical professional will help determine if IPL is right for you in order to achieve your goals. The ideal candidates for IPL:

  • Have sun damage, including sun spots
  • Have aged skin with fine lines and wrinkles
  • Have redness associated with rosacea
  • Have pigmented acne scars
  • Desire a nonsurgical solution

how does an ipl photofacial work?

In our office, we use the Elite MPX Aesthetic Workstation for IPL treatments. Prior to the treatment, the patient will be given protective eyewear to prevent damage to the eyes from the light source. A cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area, and during the treatment, we will use the handheld device to deliver varying wavelengths to penetrate the skin. During treatment, patients should expect to experience the sensation of a rubber band snapping on the skin. There is no downtime associated with IPL.

how long is recovery after an ipl photofacial?

After IPL treatment, patients can expect to experience mild redness and dark, splotchy areas that usually go away within a few hours. The skin will heal over several days and weeks to result in smoother, younger, and more even-toned skin. For the best results, several treatments are needed, usually 5 – 6. The treatments will be performed every few weeks to provide gradual, long-standing results.

ipl photofacial faq

How much does IPL cost?
Every patient case is unique, so the cost of IPL will vary based on your concerns. Beyond Beautiful Cosmetic Surgery offers specials on treatments like IPL often, and we accept most payment methods. During your initial visit, we can estimate costs and determine the number of treatments needed for optimal results.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Improvements can be seen following your session, but the best results can be seen about one month after all of your treatments are complete. It’s normal for your skin to get varying results after each session. You will see fading of redness, blotchiness, sunspots, and age spots.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
Most patients have mild side effects like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. These should go away on their own within a day or two after the procedure. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun, and you should keep in mind that excessive sun exposure will impact your results. You should also wear sunscreen to avoid issues like spots and redness.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
Before getting IPL, patients are usually asked to skip self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 – 4 weeks before their treatment. You might need to discontinue the use of certain medications several days before each treatment, and you may want to start taking pain relievers a week before your treatment to help prevent bruising. You should also use sunscreen.

Why should I get multiple IPL sessions?
Multiple IPL sessions are better to produce gradual, natural-looking improvements to your complexion. Every session helps to diminish surface irregularities and spots. A series of sessions also produce longer-lasting results.
