Spider veins are well-defined small veins that appear on the surface layer of the skin. They may appear as scattered, irregular veins but commonly occur in clusters of varying density. There are many factors that contribute to the cause of spider veins. Though not dangerous, spider veins are a cosmetic concern to many patients because of the appearance and location. For spider veins on the legs and other areas of the body, Plano, TX double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vu Ho, uses sclerotherapy, which is a solution injected into the vein, causing it to disappear gradually. Facial spider veins are most commonly treated using a laser to deliver pulses of laser light, causing the vein to collapse.

"Just had my first Beyond Beautiful experience. I scheduled a Stimulator Peel with Sarah. She is amazing. Knowledgeable and personable, a Master Medical Esthetician. Not only am I impressed with my facial but I am impressed with my entire visit at Beyond Beautiful. Everyone is friendly and inviting. I didn’t feel pressured or pushed to add on services. They gave me recommendations but nothing extreme. I’m thankful for the great recommendation given to me by my Bestie. I will be back to Beyond Beautiful and recommend everyone to give them a try. During a consultation, a medical professional will help determine if sclerotherapy is right for you in order to achieve your goals. The ideal candidates for sclerotherapy:
- Have visible spider veins, usually on the legs
- Want to diminish the appearance of spider veins
- Have pain or discomfort associated with spider veins
- Should not be pregnant
- Desire long-lasting results
What to Expect
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in the office. A sclerosing solution (usually a type of salt solution) is injected into the vein via a thin needle. The dosage amount and treatment time can vary significantly from patient to patient depending on the number of veins and their condition. Each vein can require numerous injections. As the doctor is injecting the vein, he or she will apply pressure to spread the solution and stop any bleeding. The injections might cause a patient to experience slight discomfort and cramping. Sclerotherapy usually takes between 15 – 30 minutes.
The sclerosing solution irritates the blood vessel’s lining, which causes it to swell and then stick together. The blood will then clot. As time goes on, the blood vessel will turn into scar tissue and will then fade to the point where the vein isn’t noticeable. Patients will begin to notice the vein diminishing within 2 – 3 weeks and full results are usually achieved in 6 weeks. While every vein may not be able to be treated, most patients can experience a dramatic transformation in the appearance of spider veins. Some patients may require additional treatments.
