About Hormone Replacement

Hormone fluctuations are a very normal and common part of life for most women. As natural shifts in our hormones take place, our bodies react in different ways, often causing us to feel a little bit "off." You may feel a little more sensitive, or like you're just not yourself though you are unable to pinpoint the cause. Often, the underlying explanation is insufficient testosterone. You may be asking yourself, "But isn't testosterone a male hormone?" The answer is both yes and no. In females, the ovaries and adrenal glands produce small amounts of testosterone throughout their lifetime. However, once a woman has reached menopause, testosterone levels deplete, causing lack of energy, loss of sex drive, generalized fatigue, loss of muscle volume, and weight gain. Cosmetic surgeons Dr. Jeffrey Caruth and Dr. Vu Ho believe that an exciting and effective solution for low testosterone is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy at Beyond Beautfiul.

Hormone Therapy for Men

Men often suffer from low testosterone beginning after the age of 30. Low testosterone for men can mean a loss of muscle mass, fatigue, and decreased sex drive. This hormonal fluctuation is extremely common and affects one in every four men over 30 years of age. If you believe if may be suffering from low testosterone, schedule a consultation with Dr. Caruth or Dr. Vu Ho to learn more about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

Procedure Technique

Dr. Caruth and Dr. Vu Ho perform hormone replacement therapy with bioidentical pellets. Made from plant-based materials, testosterone pellets are created at a compounding pharmacy and are specifically customized to the needs of each patient. The pellets are small enough to be subcutaneously placed by Dr. Caruth or Dr. Vu in a simple, office procedure using local anesthesia.

Following a blood panel and diagnostic testing, Dr. Caruth or Dr. Vu will gently insert your customized bioidentical pellet through a very small incision in your upper hip. The incision will not require sutures or a recovery period afterward.

What To Expect

Within days, you’ll notice a difference. Patients experience a rise in their energy levels, sex drive, and weight loss. The effects of the pellets last four to six months. The likelihood of complications following pellet insert is very low. Common symptoms include minor bleeding, bruising, and discoloration of the skin. Rarely, infection and possible extrusion of the pellet can occur. Taking baths (fully submerged) and swimming should be avoided for up to five days after insertion and vigorous physical activity should be avoided for two full days for women and up to seven days for men.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know if hormone therapy is appropriate for me?
Hormone replacement therapy is not an ideal solution for everyone. During a consultation, Dr. Caruth or Dr. Ho will work to understand your symptoms and concerns and discuss your lifestyle to determine if the treatment is right for you. While hormone replacement therapy is life changing, it requires regular monitoring and blood draws to ensure you are receiving the correct dosage. Only a medical professional should help you make the decision about your candidacy for hormone therapy.

How do you diagnose a hormone imbalance?
Generally, you will go through a physical exam, a consultation, and a review of your current health conditions, medications, symptoms, and family medical history. Then, the diagnostic process for hormonal imbalances is a blood draw that studies the hormone levels in the body that corresponds with your symptoms.

How long do the pellets last?

The pellets usually last between 3 - 5 months in women and 5 - 6 months in men. High levels of stress, physical activity, some medications and lack of sleep may increase the rate at which the pellet absorbs and may require pellets to be inserted sooner in some patients.
